Heat-treatment induced microstructural evolution of TiC-based hard metal coatings

 Abstract:
TiC based hardmetal coatings have shown great potential for high temperature sliding wear applications. This is attributed to the high temperature strength and hardness of these materials and their ability to form lubricous titanium sub-oxides under tribo-oxidation conditions. Testing of these coatings to date has been performed on as-sprayed coatings. However, past work has shown that carbide coatings can undergo significant microstructural changes when operating at elevated temperatures for extended periods. Such changes potentially impact on the sliding wear and oxidation performance of the coating. This work describes the changes that occurred in heat-treated HVOF sprayed TiC based coatings. The coatings were treated at 700°C for up to 30 days and the microstructure and composition were characterised qualitatively and semi-quantitatively by XRD, SEM and image analysis. The effect of the microstructural changes on the mechanical properties of the coatings was also assessed.
