 Abstract:
Suspension spraying of ceramics for thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) has become a rapidly advancing field in the last few years due to the ability to generate segmented or columnar coatings. Production level equipment has become available for coating development in the form of specially adapted high power plasma systems that have allowed industrially relevant processing of such coatings. While SPS is able to compete with EB-PVD in terms of performance and processing cost; further improvements will be required to close the gap to traditional powder spraying.

This paper will focus on some recent developments in high rate SPS processing of columnar and segmented coatings for TBCs and the challenges to overcome. In parallel, a great deal of work is being done to utilize SPS to produce the next generation of TBC that require multiple materials and multi-layer structures in order to increase operational temperature limits of the coating system. Some recent developments in this field will be discussed.
