Particle-at-impact parameters in Cold Spray are governed mostly by the gas flow parameters. However, the location of the powder injection point can be used as independent factor to control particle-in-flight parameters. Calculations and experiments confirm a strong influence of the location of the powder injection point on dynamics of the particle heating and acceleration. A novel and promising approach for cold spraying of multicomponent coatings is introduced based on this effect. The paper proposes a method of spraying two-component mixtures composed of a hard-sprayable and an easy-sprayable component. A general schematic of the method is as follows: The hard-sprayable component is injected into the subsonic part of the nozzle at a gas stagnation temperature favorable for this material to start the coating formation alone. The point of injection of the easy-sprayable component is determined in such a way that the particles of this material have, at the nozzle outlet, temperature and velocity sufficient for the coating formation at the selected gas stagnation temperature. The paper discusses a spraying nozzle newly designed for the proposed technical solution.
