 Abstract:
For this study, coatings of tungsten carbides in metallic Co-based matrix were deposited by HVOF on low carbon steel substrates. Different deposition parameters were used in order to prepare coatings with tailored stress state. Fatigue lives of samples with deposited layers were determined using SF-test device and compared to uncoated substrates. Despite no significant difference in coating microstructures, experiment proved a strong sensitivity of the specimen fatigue life to deposition conditions. Fractographic analysis was carried out on broken specimens and its results indicate that difference in the fatigue performance may be connected with the change in mechanism of crack initiation.
