 Abstract:
In this study, wear performance of Al-12Si matrix SiC particle reinforced coating deposited on a 6082 Al alloy by cold spray process was examined. Wear tests were conducted on a reciprocating wear tester by rubbing a 6 mm diameter Al2O3 ball under normal loads of 1 N and 4 N. Wear tests were performed in air and in water. SiC reinforced Al-12Si matrix composite coatings exhibited higher wear resistances when compared to that of the substrate both in air and in water. On the other hand, when the sliding conditions were compared, wear rate of the composite coatings were significantly lower in water. Testing in water at 4 N led to lower wear rate as compared to that of performed under the load of 1 N in air. However, this observation is not eligible for the 6082 Al alloy substrate.
