 Abstract:
Aluminium is widely used in industry and highly corrosive environments due to properties such as excellent corrosion resistance and low weight. Cold spray technology, in contrast to current fabrication technologies, has provided the potential for aluminium to be utilized in broader industrial applications and at lower cost. For this purpose, a new alloy with a matrix of aluminium was sprayed and optimized, improving aluminium hardness and substrate resistance to corrosion.
Particle velocity is the most important parameter in the cold spray process that leads to successful deposition of powder at supersonic speeds. For this reason, in this study, pressure and spray temperature were the changing parameters, with a range of temperatures from 200°C to 800°C and pressures from 20 to 40 bars.
On the other hand, the effect of different substrates in all physicochemical properties was studied, to understand different dynamic deformation behaviours and interface features.
Mechanical, physical and structural properties were studied and a comparison of all of these properties was done and related with the effect of the substrate on them. Concerning the mechanical properties, adherence tests, micro- and nano-hardness were made with good results about hardness and adherence on steel.
Thickness and defects (porosity or cracks) with corrosion resistance were measured. The coatings demonstrated a good corrosion resistance, specially because of the absence or low levels of porosity or cracks.
