Assessment of particle sensor performance in the plasma spray process

 Abstract:
This paper will address methods for assessing the performance of particle state sensors in the context of real-time control, focusing on two main areas. First, we will discuss sensor accuracy and methods for evaluating the effects of sensing errors on particle state distribution, an issue that is particularly important for sensors with coupled velocity, temperature and diameter measurements. As part of that discussion, we will cover sensor calibration approaches and specifically a method for calibrating the velocity for sensors with intensity-based velocity measurements. Second, we will evaluate sensing strategies by virtue of the ability to correlate with deposited coating properties. This will cover methods for identifying appropriate non-dimensional parameters for correlations, and determining the best metrics of the particle state distributions to use in those correlations. Experiments over a range of torch operating conditions will provide a basis for both the sensor accuracy and coating correlation studies.
