 Abstract:
High velocity oxygen-fuel (HVOF) has been used as fabrication technique to deposit pure aluminium and aluminium-silicon coatings as well as metal matrix composites (MMC) coatings based on both metal powders as matrix with different percentatges of silicon carbide particles as reinforcement. The coatings were fabricated on a magnesium-aluminium alloy, AZ91. A taguchi desing of experiments (DOE) has been used to establish a relationship between the spraying conditions used and the coatings characteristics obtained. The spraying distance, % SiCp in feedstock, number of layers deposited and gun speed has been related to the characteristic of the fabricated coatings, i.e. thickness, real incorporation of the reinforcement (SiCp), roughness and adhesión. In addition, a comparision between the matrix nature of the coatings had been developed. Based on Taguchi DOE method, the relationship between the spraying conditions used and the coating obtained remained equivalent independently of the nature of the matrix used. However, coating characteristics changed in function of the aluminium matrix selected.
