 Abstract:
In the current investigation, plasma spray technique was used for depositing hydroxyapatite (HA) and hydroxyapatite silicon oxide (SiO2) coatings on titanium (Ti) substrate. In HA-SiO2 coating, 10 wt% SiO2 was mixed with HA. The corrosion resistance of the uncoated, HA coated and HA + 10 wt% SiO2 coated Ti was investigated by potentiodynamic polarization test after immersion in simulated human body fluid (Ringers solution) for 24 hours. The as-sprayed and dipped samples were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analyses. The results of electrochemical study reveals that the HA coating improves the corrosion resistance of Ti. The addition of SiO2 in HA further enhances the corrosion resistance HA coating on Ti. The results of the Scherrers equation confirm the rise in crystallite size (Ä) of the coated samples after corrosion testing in Ringers solution.
