 Abstract:
YSZ is a promising material for protection against cavitation erosion because of the martensitic transformation during the cavitation erosion process. It is very interesting to fabricate dense YSZ coating to be applied in a cavitation erosion situation.
In this study, 8wt. % yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) powder was deposited on the substrates by atmospheric plasma spray (APS). The coatings were post treated by laser glazing under different parameters in order to densify them. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation of the surface and crossing section of the as-sprayed and laser-glazed coatings were carried out to investigate the influence of laser glazing on the densification. 3D morphology characterization was used to identify the healing effect on the YSZ coating by laser glazing. The characterization of the laser pools under different laser treatment conditions were also studied. The rough surface of YSZ was converted into smooth micro-size grains and narrow grain boundaries. As a result of the decrease in the grain size, Vickers hardness of the glazed surface increased compared to that of the as-sprayed coating.
