 Abstract:
Hydroxyapatite (HA) with a chemical formula of Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2 was developed by solution precursor plasma spraying (SPPS) using calcium nitrate and triethyl phosphite precursors. The precursors were initially mixed for 24 hours and analyzed using DTA/TG methods. The SPPS-HA coatings were aimed to reach 50 µm in thickness and were observed to have a cauliflower-like microstructure using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The conventional atmospheric plasma sprayed coatings using dry powder were used for comparison. The detailed microstructure of tested coatings was obtained using electron back-scattered diffraction microscopy (EBSD). The technique allowed observation of crystallographic orientation in each lamella inside the coatings and correlated with their X-ray diffraction (XRD) profile. The latter enabled to find out the major phase in the coating which was hexagonal hydroxyapatite and the phases of decomposition. Moreover, the crystal orientation was determined using XRD phase analysis and the size of crystal grains in coatings was estimated.
