The formation of refractory metal coatings by thermal spraying is associated with two major challenges: 1) particles of materials having high melting temperatures should be heated to reach a semi-molten or a molten state; 2) oxidation of the metals should be prevented. In this presentation, we will report the results of the studies of the detonation spraying behavior of tantalum and molybdenum. The metals were sprayed under varying parameters - explosive charge, O2/C2H2 ratio, spraying distance - using a Computer-Controlled Detonation Spraying (CCDS2000) facility. The temperatures and velocities of the particles were calculated for a wide range of the spraying conditions. The state of the particles upon collision with a substrate was determined by the splat technique. The bonding strength and microhardness of the coatings were measured. Our investigations have shown that it is possible to form coatings from tantalum and molybdenum powders by detonation spraying largely retaining their metallic nature. Detonation spraying conditions favoring the formation of oxide phases have also been determined. The surface morphology and structural characterization of the coatings will be presented.
