 Abstract:
In this work a numerical analysis of the operating gas effect on the deposition of cold sprayed coatings is presented. The particles impact velocities and temperatures of a selected powder material were calculated using CFD simulation software for different operating gases. The particles critical velocities were calculated in order to compare the theoretical mass ratio of particles achieving deposition with the deposition efficiencies of coatings produced with different operating gases. Using the simulation results a comparative analysis was performed in order to understand the effect of the operating gas on the in-flight particles physics. The results of this study suggest that an improvement on the deposition efficiency can be expected with a minor increase of the gas velocity due to the increment of particles achieving their critical velocity within a powder size distribution. The methodologies presented in this study can be used for a proper spraying parameters selection.
