 Abstract:
Recently we successfully developed a new suspension plasma spray (SPS) system by using a twin-cathode plasma spray gun. The system consists of three plasma torches (central main torch with cathode nozzle and anode, and two sub-torches on the sides with anode nozzle and cathode).
The system is characterized by using only argon (Ar) as the plasma gas (without using any other gases) and low input power, which makes it a gas and power consumption SPS system, compared to the other available SPS systems.
On the other hand, the system had the unique characteristic of the axial feeding of the feedstock materials (thus, the main torch electrode has a hollowed anode). The feedstock particles are axially injected into the center of the plasma jet along the axis of its flow. This study will show the axial feeding features of the fine ceramic particles by the new SPS system, and its effect on the coating microstructure.
