 Abstract:
Extensive effort has been carried out to increase the efficiency of gas turbines. Since the early 1990s, Ytrria Stabilized Zircona is used as thermal barrier coating to decrease the bare alloy's temperature by 200-300°C. This ceramic is coated on bare superalloys using different techniques such as Air Plasma Spraying and Electron Beam Physical Vapor Deposition. Market studies showed that, in 2015 the revenue of thermal barrier coatings' technologies was estimated to be 7.6 billion USD and is forecasted to reach 12 billion USD by the end of 2021. Different materials were developed such as Cerium oxide and rare earth Zirconates as well as new technologies such as Suspension Plasma spraying and cold spraying to increase the efficiency of the gas turbine with the increase of service temperature. Today superalloys are gradually being substituted with ceramic matrix composites thus, environmental barrier coatings are now developing to protect these composites from hot corrosion and oxidation caused by water vapor.
