 Abstract:
YSZ based TBCs are commonly applied for high temperature processes due to their good oxidation resistance and mechanical properties. Nevertheless, ceramic Cr-Cr2O3 coatings can be alternatively used at operating temperatures up to 1000°C.
For the present research, the APS deposited YSZ and Cr-Cr2O3 coatings were subjected to cyclic oxidation at 900°C and 1000°C for 350 h. The as-sprayed and oxidized samples were characterized by means of XRD and combined SEM and EDX analyses in order to investigate their microstructure, chemical composition and phase distribution. The corrosion behavior of the coatings in NaCl aqueous solution was evaluated using an electrochemical polarization method. To determine the tribological properties of the coatings, pin-on-disk tests under ambient conditions were performed. The microhardness and adhesion to the substrate were investigated as well.
Based on the obtained results concerning the thermal performance of the coatings in correlation with the other above-mentioned properties, the Cr-Cr2O3 coatings revealed a better protection of the substrate. Moreover, these types of coatings exhibit an excellent gas tightness and a thermal shock resistance under alternating temperatures, making them suitable for further technical applications.
