 Abstract:
Ceramic coatings from micro thick to millimeter can be manufactured by thermal spray technologies. When the ceramic powders flied in the carrier gas or in the hot stream, they were usually compressed and may burst due to the compressive force. Therefore, the compressive strength was important for predicting the collapsing content of the powders in thermal spray processes. In this study, the compressive strength of some ceramic powders in collapsing process was tested in an unique indentation machine. In the test, single powder, with a diameter between 5 and 95 um, was compressed by an round indenter with diameter of 100 um. The powders compressive behavior was investigated by observing their shape change in load-unload process. The influence of the powder size and shape on the compressive strength was studied. Some common ceramic materials such like YSZ, WC and alumina were investigated.
