Abstract: |
Bioactive glass coatings have attracted much attention in bone repair applications during the last years, these were the first synthetic materials to show bonding to bone via chemical reactions and at the same time they degrade in the body.
Plasma sprayed bioactive glass coatings were obtained using crushed bioactive glass powders, their microstructure was analyzed through scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Additionally, mechanical properties such as coating adhesion to the substrate was evaluated for the as-sprayed coatings. Furthermore, a functionalization of titanium alloy substrates was reached spraying bioactive glass powders by cold gas spray technique.
Coatings and functionalized surfaces have been tested in vitro to evaluate their response when culturing human osteoblasts and their bioactivity has been studied by immersion in Hank's solution.
