 Abstract:

The Ni-based thermally sprayed coatings are used to protect the steel surfaces from corrosion and oxidation even at high temperatures, preventing the substrate from scaling. When applied in service, the combined corrosive-mechanical loading can be expected. In power industry, the corrosion-erosion-cavitation loading often takes place. The NiCr alloys can be deposited by different spraying technologies, resulting in coatings with variable microstructures and consequently variable coatings behavior. In this study, the microstructures of Ni-20Cr coatings, sprayed by TWAS, HVOF and Cold Spray techniques are evaluated and related to the results of mechanical and corrosion tests. The fundamental coatings characteristics are compared, such as hardness and adhesion/cohesion strength, accompanied by results of abrasion test, solid particle erosion test, water droplet erosion test, cavitation erosion test and the test of high temperature corrosion behavior in aggressive environment. The results give comprehensive comparison of coatings, tested at comparable conditions, and showed the applicability and limits of coatings, sprayed by different technologies.
