 Abstract:
Aluminium Vacuum Brazing (Al-VB) is state of the art for heat exchangers for several decades. Although Al-CAB is the leading technology today, Al-VB is still used, e.g. due to the advantages e.g. of cleanliness and being free of residual flux.
However, process descriptions and models are mainly based on former work and partly going back to the early development of this process. Actually, findings on aluminium vacuum brazing lead to the question if this supposed well-known process still features some secrets that come up when the process is evaluated more holistically.
In this paper, further results of fundamental research on aluminium vacuum brazing are presented, focused on the role and behaviour of Mg during Al-VB. Furthermore, some results on joining of copper and aluminium by vacuum brazing are taken into account. This leads to an alternative perception to the behaviour of the oxide layer during Al-VB. Finally, validity of existing models and opinions will be discussed.
