 Abstract:
Plasma spray industrial processes are using today different type of plasma torches like the F4, 9MB, O3CP, F1, F210 or SG100 etc. All these torches are in operation successfully since several decades but they have the weakness that they are producing a very high turbulent plasma which prone to a non-stable melting of the injected powder in the plasma torches resulting in coatings which defects and which prone also to limited deposition efficiency and process robustness. The actual need of improving the coating performance such as reduction of coating defects, deposition efficiency, increase gun power as well lifetime, forces the industry to develop new plasma torch technology. Since few years stabilized plasma arc torches have been introduced in the market. The principles is to fix the plasma arc length using floating (cascade) electrode (e.g. neutrode). Results presented for this study will include the characterization the plasma fluctuations of the new industrial plasma arc stabilized torches family Debye™ X. A correlation of these fluctuations depending on the length of the plasma arc obtained by the variation of the number of cascade electrode and of the plasma parameter setup (arc length, current, plasma gas mix and electrical equivalent circuit) will be presented. Cr2O3 coating for paper industry produced wit Debye technology will be discussed and a snapshot of other type of coatings will be presented to highlight the impact of the Debye™ technology.
