 Abstract:
Deposition of hybrid plasma-sprayed coatings employing both dry powder and liquid feedstocks enables preparation of innovative coating architectures. Using this technique, miniature domains of additional material may be introduced via the liquid feedstock route into the more conventional powder-deposited coating microstructure, providing potential benefits for the coating functionality, e.g., mechanical, chemical, self-healing, to name a few. In this contribution, the tribological properties of hybrid coatings were explored using powder-alumina-based coatings with various suspension-delivered additions of chromia (Cr2O3), yttria (Y2O3), and titania (TiO2). The coatings were subjected to dry sliding wear testing for the evaluation and comparison of the systems’ wear resistance and coefficient of friction, and the wear tracks were further analyzed using scanning electron microscopy for qualitative assessment of the wear mechanisms and their correlation with the performance.
