 Abstract:
In mass production thermal spray coating centers need to be designed in suitable ways to permit best possible cost effectiveness. In many applications continuously operating torches combined with handling systems that manipulate workpieces with minimized dead time in front of spray jets represent the most effective solution. According concepts have been realized for single-layer applications like brake disks or electrically insulated bearings as well as for multi-layer applications like thermally sprayed heaters. In other applications closed-loop process control permits cost savings by near net shape material deposition and accordingly minimized post-machining. Modern thermal spray coating center controllers are generally capable of providing all controlled parameter values for external storage and evaluation. Especially for production of safety relevant components identification of individual workpieces, assigning of adapted recipes and storage of all relevant production process parameters has become state-of-the-art. With the transition of industries towards smart factories and implementation of big data approaches, data transfer to central data banks and master controllers and accordingly implementation of standardized interfaces of coating centers become more and more important. Exploitation of information conveyed in such production data for optimization of process conditions and complete process chains is only starting.
