 Title:
Utilization of instrumented indentation on thermal sprayed coating mechanical property characterization

 Authors:
Tomi Suhonen* / VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, Finland

 Abstract:
Different indentation methods are nowadays widely used in material property characterization. These methods like hardness-, elastic modulus-, strain hardening-, scratch- and fracture toughness tests provide valuable information of component performance and life expectancy under different conditions. Can indentation methods and formulas developed for homogenous bulk materials or for thin coatings be used with lamellar structures like thermal sprayed coatings?
The structure of HVOF sprayed carbide and oxide coatings are studied as well as it´s effect on mechanical properties. The main focus areas are the effects of coating microstructure and residual stresses on fracture toughness, crack initiation- and propagation resistance.
