 Abstract:
Ground engagement tools of earthmoving machinery are exposed to severe
corrosion-wear environments. The amount of removed material is
significant; therefore, the construction material, typically low alloy
steel, needs to be thick enough to provide the appropriate structural
strength when the cross-section becomes thinner due to the wear. Wear
resistant materials can be welded on the steel structures using the
metal-inert-gas (MIG) and plasma-transferred-arc (PTA) methods. The
protective layer will extend the wear life of the ground engagement tools and the cross section of the underlying material can be reduced. The reduced overall weight will result in a lower fuel consumption and carbon footprint. Several materials including alloys based on glass forming compositions were tested using laboratory and field test. The present study was a part of the Structurally Integrated Coatings for Wear and Corrosion project supported by the United States Department of Energy (DOE) under the Cooperative Agreement No. DE-FC36-04GO14037.
