 Abstract:
WC-Co/metal multilayer coatings containing total 8 layers have been developed by Warm Spray (WS) depositionin order to enhance fracture resistance of WC-Co based coatings. Volume fraction of WC-Co layers and metal layers were varied by changing the thickness of them. The strength and fracture behavior of the freestanding coatings were investigated by three point bending tests. In-situ observation of fracture behaviors were also carried out during the tests. Due to ductile mechanical properties of Warm Sprayed metal layers, the obtained multi layer coatings exhibited higher elongation to fracture than the monolithic WC-Co coatings. In addition, with increasing volume fraction of metal layers, it was found that the bending strength of the multi-layer coatings increased even higher than the monolithic WC-Co case.
