 Abstract:
For the gas metal arc welding (GMAW) process an axisymmetric transient numerical analysis and computational module were done to simulate the phenomena of the electrode melting; the droplet formation, detachment and transfer. During simulation, the argon plasma and steel filler metal with diameter 1,2mm were used. Weld pool dynamic and cathode processes were not considered within this work. The transient melt-flow velocities, temperature distributions in the droplet were calculated. The predicted droplet detachment and flight trajectory are in good agreement with published data. It was shown that the droplet transfer depends on the transient distributions of current density, and current density depends on droplet temperature, metal evaporation from droplet surface, plasma temperature, plasma pressure etc.
