Abstract: Electron beam surfi-sculpt could modify the surface structure, which would be potentially used in the area of materials surface treatment. In this paper, electron beam surfi-sculpt of Ti-6Al-4V was realized by a new control system and a innovative hexagon scanning waveform. At the same time, microstructure and hardness of protrusions was analyzed. It was found that four different structural zones existed in the protrusion, including base metal, heat affected zone(HAZ), central zone and edge zone. The hardness result showed that the value of HAZ was the biggest, while the rest were similar. Finally, forming mechanism of surfi-sculpt was investigated by numerical simulation. The results showed that surface tension and metal vapour pressure were key factores of developing of protrusions. Key words: electron beam surfi-sculpt; hexagon scanning waveform; microstructure; forming mechanism; numerical simulation
