 Abstract:
Micro welding with the electron beam was proposed some years ago. Nevertheless this kind of application is not yet really well established. Perhaps the lack of suitable instrumentation has been one eason why this was so. Another reason is the fact that welding in very small dimensions is not just a matter of downscaling the common welding parameters. Rather, it requires a more sophisticated look nto the changed conditions provided by very small and/or very thin work pieces. We will try to describe the challenges and give an overview of the state of the art in this field.

Furthermore, the availability of the electron beam as a versatile standard tool made it obvious that it is not only useful as a highly efficient micro welding tool. In fact, it appears that many up to now less common applications also become relevant. We will provide some examples and discuss the future applications we anticipate.
