 Title:
EB welding of turbocharger rotors - many aspects, many concepts

 Authors:
Klaus-Rainer Schulze* / Schulze-Consulting, Germany

 Abstract:
There are numerous manufacturers around the world making turbochargers for a wide spectrum of engines - from small compact cars to big stationary generators. Beside friction welding with its typical limitations mainly EB welding is used to join the turbine wheel with the shaft.

The paper deals with the variety of demands made on the design, the materials, and on the welds as well as with the different ways to come to applicable solutions. This will enlighten that for different situations (application case, design, materials, and production cycle et al.) different arrangements will be suited. There is not one solution best for all. And some ideas - as nice they are - can cause difficult obstacles.

The paper does not try to point out completely new welding solutions but it is intended to demonstrate the diversity of aspects and their interdependency manufacturers have to take into account.
