Sophisticated welding problems or efficient mass production, the electron beam has been established as reliable, efficient and economic joining technology throughout the industry. Techniques like automatic beam alignment, advanced seam tracking and seam inspection have supported the electron beam to become a standard tool in todays production environment. Examples from different fields of the industry are illustrating the capabilities and requirements of the electron beam technology. Among other applications the paper features examples from welding of jet engine components in aviation industry, welding of low cost, high volume parts from automotive industry. Focus of the paper is to highlight technical and economic aspects of the industrial applications of electron beam technology.
