Abstract: |
Electron beam welding technology was developed in the 1960s. As a result of the research and development for improving the defect of electron beam welding, such as long tact time and short electrode life, electron beam welding technology came to be widely used in the automotive industry from the 1970s. On the other hand, electron beam irradiation is applied to the surface treatment recently. For example, the surface treatment method for polishing, blast finishing and heat treatment by electron beam irradiation was developed. In this paper, authors give an outline of the surface treatment technology by the electron beam irradiation in Japan, and introduce both the method of controlling the friction coefficient of metal surfaces and the method of forming alloy layers on metal surfaces by electron beam irradiation.
