 Title:
Round Table Discussion "Electron Beam Welding, a technology with a tradition of providing materials' processing solutions"

 Authors:
Michael Mücke* / Global Beam Technologies AG, Deutschland

 Abstract:
The event will begin with a review of the current status of EB technology. This open forum will give both machine manufacturers and EB technology users the opportunity to discuss their thoughts on the current state of the art in EB processing along with their needs and desires for future developments. All forum participants will become members of the panel.

Traditional EB applications and equipment will be reviewed followed by the newest, state-of-the-art EB applications and equipment. Typical welding tasks from the aviation and automotive industries will be used to demonstrate how electron beam welding has often been employed to produce the highest quality welds for these industries. The thermal treatment of material prior to or post welding enhances the advantages of this technology. Surface treatment and its modification open new opportunities for using the electron beam for industrial applications. Additive manufacturing, Non Vac or residual Vac technologies expand the scope EB processing beyond the traditional vacuum environment.

Last but not least, the meeting could find ideas for spreading the knowledge about EB processing to industry and institutions of education. Even though for many decades the process has proven itself to be beneficial, too few welders, designers, managers or educators understand the benefits of EB processing. The solutions of the EB technology for thermal treatment of materials are worthwhile to be used more in industrial applications. The participants are invited to prepare them self to be part of this event.
