 Abstract:
Aluminum and its alloys-based metal matrix composites (AMCs) are an important class of materials because of their attractive properties, such as higher specific strength and improved wear resistance over their base alloys. Ceramic particles such as SiC, TiC and Al2O3 have been recognized as potential reinforcement for AMCs. However, production costs, machinability and incompatibility with the environment have so far hampered ceramic particle reinforced AMCs to be utilized for their commercial applications in spite of their superior physical and mechanical properties. Recently, intermetallic particles (NiAl3, Al5Fe2, TiAl3, etc.) are expected to serve as practical reinforced particles to fabricate AMCs due to their high hardness, high stability and good compatibility with aluminium matrix. Therefore, the aim of the present work was to fabricate AMC reinforced with Al5Fe2 intermetallic compound particle and emphatically investigate the effect of composition and annealing temperatrue on the Al5Fe2 intermetallic compound formation and the microstructure evolution of cold-sprayed AMC compositesThe results showed that the Al5Fe2 intermetallics appeared in the Al matrix after annealing at 500oC. The content of Al5Fe2 phase increased with raising annealing temperature and Fe composition ratio in feedstock. The Fe particles in Al matrix were fully consumed via compounding reaction with Al at 550oC and remarkable fragmentation of Al5Fe2 particles occured and the sources for this were discussed.
