 Abstract:
In a tribological system not only the contacting materials but also their specific surface structure is of main importance to the systems properties. Many researches show that certain surface structures have the potential for improving the tribological performance of various applications and products, especially components for automotive engine applications like cylinder liner coatings applied by thermal spraying. These tribologically functional coatings help in boosting the efficiency of internal combustion engines by reducing the internal friction and improving the durability and wear resistance of the cylinder running surface much-needed for engine downsizing tasks together with a high corrosion resistance enabling the use of bio fuels. Therefore this application perfectly demonstrates the potential of combining new materials and different surface structures to improve components for tribological applications.

In reference to this application, the present paper will explain different coating deposition and optimization techniques for thermal spray coatings for cylinder liner applications. The thermally sprayed coatings presented were applied using different techniques. Also several coating materials, including novel nanostructured powders, have been investigated and compared to state-of-the-art cylinder liners. The performance of the coated cylinder liners regarding wear, friction coefficient and effects of the surface topography represent a new approach to enhance the performance of conventional materials and components of internal combustion engines.
Additionally, the paper will present a novel approach for the measurement of the specific surface structures and porosity in the nano- and micro-range, especially of thermally sprayed coatings and will illustrate the effects of this intrinsic surface structure and coating porosity on the tribological properties of cylinder liner coatings.
