 Abstract:

The application of spraying dense, segmented, strain tolerant thermal barrier coating systems on various turbine components is not new and has been used for years on various IGT turbine blades and combustors. The advantage of these systems has been: 1) excellent erosion resistance; 2) high thermal cyclic fatigue resistance; 3) high deposition rate and 4) lower cost alternative to other coating processes. The key disadvantage of these systems is higher thermal conductivity compared to more porosus coating systems and 2) tighter spray processes parameters and material specifications for meeting the overall coating design intent.

This paper will discuss ways to extend performance through the utilization of synergetic integration of new materials systems and gun technology. New gun designs will allow for more flexible, reliable and cost effective coating solutions. New material designs will look at a alternative bond coats, unique coating microstructures, purity and chemistry for zirconia base top coats. Paper will discuss ways of achieving cost effective, lower conductivity segmented TBCs with excellent thermal cyclic life
