 Abstract:
Currently thermal spray and physical vapor deposition are preferred methods of applying thermal barrier coatings (TBC'S). This paper explores the possibility of applying zirconia based coatings using plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO). Benefits of this technique are the circumvention of bond coat requirements and the ability to coat ID's as well as conformally coating complex parts. This paper presents work done on aluminum alloys for automotive applications as well as titanium and nickel based alloys for aerospace and ground gas turbine applications
