 Abstract:
In the current investigation, a nanostructured Ni-20Cr coating was formulated on SAE-213-T22 steel by cold-spraying. The Ni-20Cr coating powder was prepared by the ball milling route. The oxidation behavior of the coating was investigated under cyclic conditions at 900° C for 50 cycles. The kinetics of oxidation was established using weight change measurements for the uncoated and the coated boiler steel. The oxidized samples were characterized using X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy/Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), and X-ray mapping analyses. The nanostructured coating was found to have 2.2-times higher microhardness in comparison with the microstructured Ni-20Cr coating. The coating was successful in reducing the oxidation rate of the steel in terms of weight gain. The coating reduced the weight gain of the steel by 68%. The coating was found to have oxidation-protective oxides such as NiO, Cr2O3 in its oxide scale and was found to be spallation-free.
