 Abstract:
Improving of process reliability is a prevalent issue in thermal spray technology. It is closely related to process design since both of them are intended to yield specific quality characteristics by controlling the process. For this, implicit approaches are needed to rapidly conclude on relevant coating properties in-situ instead of measuring them explicitly and ex-situ. Such approaches can be based on extrinsic as well as on intrinsic process variables exhibiting specific advantages and disadvantages, each.

In this work, the effects of these plasma spray process variables are discussed and systemized in process schemes. On this basis, different approaches to contribute to improved process reliability are described and assessed paying particular attention to in-flight particle diagnostics. Moreover, a new test applying spray spot analysis is introduced and first results are presented. Finally, specific process design methodology following the same systematics is discussed with respect to benefits and limitations.
