 Abstract:
In this study a low pressure plasma spray (LPPS, 5000-8000 Pa) and a very low pressure plasma spray (VLPPS, 100-150 Pa) were utilized to spray nano-agglomerated feedstock of Y2O3-stabilized ZrO2 (YSZ). The results showed that a coating having a novel fully nano-equiaxed structure was successfully fabricated using both LPPS and VLPPS method. The microstructure of the coatings ordinal changed from a fully nano-equiaxed-structure to a mixing grain structure and finally to a large sized grain structured coating with enhancing the plasma currents. Experimental result suggested that the nano-scale equiaxed structure in the coating was derived from the original agglomerated nano-particles that had undergone melting while inside the nozzle and were subsequently solidified or sintered on the substrate. Experiment also indicated that the nanostructured coating had lower hardness in comparison with other structured coatings that are made of the same feedstock material. The hardness of the coating is associated with a certain microstructure, namely, the microstructure of the coating can be predicted by its hardness value measured. In addition the elastic modulus of the coating was measured by the Knoop indentation method.
