Abstract: |
Modern power sources enable to take a new look at the long established core parameter of the wire arc spray process, the applied current. In standard DC mode, the movement of the arc between the wire tips is taking place randomly with a broad frequency range. Investigations regarding the behavior of the arc have been carried by the use of high speed image analysis. It was ascertained, that the position of the arc between the electrodes can be determined by taking a look at the voltage trace. In the next step, the fluctuations of the arc have been analyzed and a specific natural fluctuation frequency of the DC process has been determined. Our investigations show that the arc fluctuations can be controlled by pulsing the current. When that specific pulsing frequency is applied, the arc fluctuation frequency correlates with the frequency of the pulsed current. By controlling the arc fluctuations differences in coating properties such as the oxide content occur. The investigations suggest that when using pulsed current the mechanical properties of the system used are decisive for the resulting coating and thus need to be adapted to the electrical parameters.
