 Abstract:
Bioactive HA coating is commonly applied on medical implant. The biocompatibility of which depends highly on its phase composition and morphology. In this work, high crystallinity HA coating with extreme strong texture can be developed by microplasma spraying process (MPS) on Ti-6Al-4V substrate. Correspondingly, the microstructure of MPS-coating exhibits abundant columnar with preferential growth direction along (002) crystal plane. Besides, phase changes along coating depth and element intensities are determined by micro-Raman spectroscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. Results show that the HA columnar is mainly found above certain coating depth (about 20um). The columnar morphology highly depends on the element intensities (Ca, P and O) in the local area. The influence of process parameters on texture evolution is studied, and the formation mechanism of columnar HA via microplasma spray is thereafter discussed. Moreover, the biocompatibility of HA coating is evaluated by simulated body fluid (SBF) immersion measurements. By comparing with coating without columnar structure (fabricating by conventional air plasma spraying), the advantages of columnar structured HA on biocompatibility is investigated.
