The WB powder was firstly prepared by the Luoyang Golden Egret Cemented Carbide Tool Co., Ltd using a unique technology. The microstructure and fundamental properties of the WB compound were characterized. A new type of thermal spray feedstock reinforced with WB powder was developed. The characteristics of the feedstock powder was analyzed and compared with the conventional WC-Co spray powder, concerning the particle size distribution, density, flowability and inner structure. The cermet coatings were fabricated by HVOF thermal spraying and characterized systematically on the phase constitution, microstructure and mechanical properties. The WB-reinforced coating was compared with the WC-based coating at the same preparation and testing conditions. It was found that the hardness and wear resistance of the WB-reinforced cermet coating are obviously higher than those of the WC-based coating. By analyzing the microstructures and the failure behavior of the coatings, the effects of WB and the related mechanisms are proposed for the WB-reinforced cermet coating. The potential applications of the WB-containing powders and cermet coatings in the fields of hard materials and powder metallurgy are predicted and discussed.
