 Abstract:
Suspension plasma spray process is progressively extending its applications from laboratory studies using the lab prepared suspensions toward industry. Industrial application of this process demands for development of the market for ready to use suspensions. To this end, some of the powder suppliers have already taken steps forward by introducing to the market the suspensions of some of the most known materials such as YSZ, Alumina, Titania. There is however a need to find the possible differences in the resulting coatings when using these suspensions as compared with the freshly prepared home-made suspensions. In this work, such comparison is done using YSZ suspensions of a submicron to a few micron powders. The investigation of the suspensions and coatings properties were done through rheology and particle size distribution studies of the suspensions, resulting droplet size on the injector exit, ease of spray/injection process and the resulting coatings thicknesses, as well as deposition rates, microstructures and coatings qualities.
