 Abstract:
For a successful operation of solid oxide cells (SOCs) a robust sealant material that shows a good performance under thermal cycling and last for long-term runs is necessary. The joint needs to be electrically insulating and to have an adapted thermal expansion coefficient as well as mechanical and thermochemical stability. Glass-ceramic sealants can meet most of these requirements.
During the joining of the SOFC components, the glass-ceramic sealant partially crystallizes. Due to crystallization the initial glass transforms into a mechanically stronger material. Fast crystallization also leads to a shorter heat treatment of the stack in the start-up time which would be very favorable in terms of industrialization. The standard glass composition of the BaO-CaO-SiO2 system developed at Forschungszentrum Jülich (glass
