Over the years, Larsen & Toubro Limited has pioneered in developing state-of-the-art technologies for manufacturing of critical Process Plant equipment like Heavy Reactors and High Pressure Heat Exchangers for Refinery, Petrochemical, Fertilizer an Oil & Gas industries. Recent technological developments in these industries demand more severe operating conditions for these equopment. To cope up with this demand, new generation materials are being developed worldwide, design aspects are becoming increasingly complex, sophisticated tolerances are being called for and the quality requirements are becoming extremely stringent. In addition, the delivery time is being squeezed very hard to minimize the project cost. This paper will deal of some of the most prominent developments at Larsen & Toubro Limited over last few years like Narrow Gap welding of Longitudinal & Circular seams with DC-AC Tandem SAW up to 300 mm thickness; Narrow Gap Nozzle # Shell / Head welding by mechanized SAW up to 300 mm thickness: High deposition Tandem SAW with 5 mm dia LAS wires for welding of high pressure reactor seams; Continuous 'step-wise' Electro Slag Strip Cladding (ESSC) with 120*0,5 mm strip for weld overlay on ID of a vessel; Mechanized FCAW ID weld overlay on small diameter nozzles (down to 25 mm ID) & 90° Elbow; Shape welding for Reactor Support ring build-up etc.
