Aachen, City of Kings
The City of Aachen, formerly known in English by its French name Aix-la-Chapelle, is a historic spa city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
For 600 years, from 936 to 1531, the Aachen Cathedral was the church of coronation for 30 German kings and 12 queens and a favored residence of Charlemagne, regarded not only as the founding father of both French and German monarchies, but also as the father of Europe.
Aachen Cathedral has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
RWTH Aachen University, a center of technological research and one of the Germany's Universities of Excellence, is located in the city.
